Nairobi, Kenya – Kibera, one of East Africa’s biggest informal settlements, played host to the launch of the East African Caravan on Maternal Health in Nairobi, Kenya on July 3. In attendance were women, men, boys and girls, UN representatives, Ambassadors, representatives from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, medical doctors and other dignitaries.

The caravan makes its journey through Kenya into Tanzania and Rwanda before arriving in Kampala, Uganda on July 14, ahead of the 15th Ordinary Session of the Summit of the African Union.

The Millennium Campaign in Africa has been utilizing the 2010 FIFA World Cup as a key opportunity to build support for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) across the continent.

Across Africa on June 16, the UN Millennium Campaign and partners celebrated the Day of the African Child with events and petitions to world leaders. Some of the activities included:

On May 25, Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) Zimbabwe ambassadors Pastor G and Victor Kunonga, working closely with Zimbabwe’s premier reggae band, The Transit Crew, hosted a cultural event as part of UN Millennium Campaign-sponsored activities to commemorate the life and work of the late Dr. Tajudeen Abdul Raheem. Dr. Abdul Raheem tragically died in a car accident on Mombasa road in Kenya last year, on his way to Rwanda to promote a campaign called “Piga Debe” (Make a Big Noise) for Women’s Rights.

May 20, 2010- Last night, Italian representatives of Parliament, civil society and media gathered in Rome for a concert in memory of Tajudeen Abdul- Raheem, the late UN Millennium Campaign Deputy Director for Africa who died in a road accident one year ago. In attendance were the Millennium Campaign Regional Director for Africa, Charles Abugre, Regional Director for Europe, Marina Ponti, and Italian Coordinator, Marta Guglielmetti.

During the concert, the orchestra played a melody to the rhythm of a heart beat in memory of Abdul-Raheem.

On March 29, Members of Parliament from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Uganda, Malawi, Nigeria, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe launched a network of Parliamentarians for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at a consultative meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria. Through this network, they committed to speak with one voice to ensure that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are achieved.

The network members called for an ambitious agenda to address the poverty and inequality bedeviling the African continent and stressed that achieving the MDGs is an important first step.
